About Yabusame in Ueda:

Yabusame is a type of traditional Japanese archery where an archer on a galloping horse shoots three special “turnip-shape-headed” arrows at three wooden targets successively placed along a straight, 216-meter course.

This type of archery was first seen in the Nara Era (8th century), but the present style developed in the Kamakura Era (12th century). At Shiono Shrine in Shioda, Ueda City, there is an old archery course which is thought to be the oldest existing archery course in Japan. Ueda is proud to be historically related with this style of traditional archery.

For this event, roughly 30 members (including 10 archers) of the Dainihon Kyuuba Kai ( The Japan Equestrian Archery Association) from Kamakura will perform.

Yabusame is usually held in Kamakura, Tokyo, and other places around Japan every year for Shinto rituals, and honored guests, including presidents and kings view it. This is the first of such events to be held in Ueda City in 27 years.  It’s a unique opportunity to see a traditional Japanese military art here in Ueda. Please come and join us!

#In case of rain, it is announced at this page on Saturday whether it will be cancelled or be            performed as schduled.
